dc.description.abstract
This issue looks at the South Caucasus from a less common angle, focussing on Iran’s role in the region. The lifting of international sanctions in 2016 appeared to create new economic opportunities for Iran in the Caucasus. Contributions to this issue put into perspective the extent to which this has been the case, taking a closer look at energy and pipeline politics, competing transport corridor projects and economic relations between Iran and the South Caucasus more generally. They also take into account specific ways in which Iran has envisioned and asserted its role in the region since 1991.
