Measurement of the inelastic proton-proton cross section at root s=7 TeV
(2013)Physics Letters BA measurement is presented of the inelastic proton-proton cross section at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 7 TeV. Using the CMS detector at the LHC, the inelastic cross section is measured through two independent methods based on information from (i) forward calorimetry (for pseudorapidity 3 <vertical bar eta vertical bar < 5) in collisions where at least one proton loses more than 5 x 10(-6) of its longitudinal momentum, and (ii) the ...Journal Article -
Search for gluino mediated bottom- and top-squark production in multijet final states in pp collisions at 8 TeV
(2013)Physics Letters BA search for supersymmetry is presented based on events with large missing transverse energy, no isolated electron or muon, and at least three jets with one or more identified as a bottom-quark jet. A simultaneous examination is performed of the numbers of events in exclusive bins of the scalar sum of jet transverse momentum values, missing transverse energy, and bottom-quark jet multiplicity. The sample, corresponding to an integrated ...Journal Article -
Search for pair-produced dijet resonances in four-jet final states in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV
(2013)Physical Review LettersA search for the pair production of a heavy, narrow resonance decaying into two jets has been performed using events collected in √s=7 TeV pp collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1. Events are selected with at least four jets and two dijet combinations with similar dijet mass. No resonances are found in the dijet mass spectrum. The upper limit at 95% confidence ...Journal Article -
Search for physics beyond the standard model in events with τ leptons, jets, and large transverse momentum imbalance in pp collisions at √s =7 TeV
(2013)The European Physical Journal CA search for physics beyond the standard model is performed with events having one or more hadronically decaying τ leptons, highly energetic jets, and large transverse momentum imbalance. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.98 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s√=7 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2011. The number of observed events is consistent with predictions for standard model processes. ...Journal Article -
Measurement of the sum of WW and WZ production with W+dijet events in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV
(2013)The European Physical Journal CA measurement of the inclusive WW+WZ diboson production cross section in proton–proton collisions is reported, based on events containing a leptonically decaying W boson and exactly two jets. The data sample, collected at s√=7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1. The measured value of the sum of the inclusive WW and WZ cross sections is σ(pp→WW+WZ)=68.9±8.7 (stat.)±9.7 (syst.)±1.5 ...Journal Article -
Search for top-squark pair production in the single-lepton final state in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV
(2013)The European Physical Journal CThis paper presents a search for the pair production of top squarks in events with a single isolated electron or muon, jets, large missing transverse momentum, and large transverse mass. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb−1 of pp collisions collected in 2012 by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of s√=8 TeV. No significant excess in data is observed above the expectation from standard ...Journal Article -
Search for supersymmetry in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV in events with a single lepton, jets, and missing transverse momentum
(2013)The European Physical Journal CResults are reported from a search for new physics processes in events containing a single isolated high-transverse-momentum lepton (electron or muon), energetic jets, and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a 4.98 fb−1 sample of proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, obtained with the CMS detector at the LHC. Three separate background estimation methods, each relying primarily on control ...Journal Article -
Measurement of masses in the ttˉ system by kinematic endpoints in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV
(2013)The European Physical Journal CA simultaneous measurement of the top-quark, W-boson, and neutrino masses is reported for tt¯ events selected in the dilepton final state from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV. The analysis is based on endpoint determinations in kinematic distributions. When the neutrino and W-boson masses are constrained to their world-average values, a top-quark ...Journal Article -
Evidence for associated production of a single top quark and W boson in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV
(2013)Physical Review LettersEvidence is presented for the associated production of a single top quark and W boson in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1. The measurement is performed using events with two leptons and a jet originated from a b quark. A multivariate analysis based on kinematic properties is utilized to separate the t¯t background from the signal. The ...Journal Article -
Measurement of the ratio of the inclusive 3-jet cross section to the inclusive 2-jet cross section in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV and first determination of the strong coupling constant in the TeV range
(2013)The European Physical Journal CA measurement is presented of the ratio of the inclusive 3-jet cross section to the inclusive 2-jet cross section as a function of the average transverse momentum, ⟨pT1,2⟩, of the two leading jets in the event. The data sample was collected during 2011 at a proton–proton centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1. The strong coupling constant at the scale of the ...Journal Article
