Measurement of the Inclusive Jet Cross Section in pp Collisions at √s=7 TeV
(2011)Physical Review LettersThe inclusive jet cross section is measured in pp collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider using the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb−1. The measurement is made for jet transverse momenta in the range 18–1100 GeV and for absolute values of rapidity less than 3. The measured cross section extends to the highest values of jet pT ever observed and, within ...Journal Article -
Charged particle transverse momentum spectra in pp collisions at √s=0.9 and 7 TeV
(2011)Journal of High Energy PhysicsThe charged particle transverse momentum (p T) spectra are presented for pp collisions at √s=0.9 and 7 TeV. The data samples were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to integrated luminosities of 231 μb−1 and 2.96 pb−1, respectively. Calorimeter-based high-transverse-energy triggers are employed to enhance the statistical reach of the high-p T measurements. The results are compared with leading and next-to-leading ...Journal Article -
Search for heavy stable charged particles in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV
(2011)Journal of High Energy PhysicsThe result of a search at the LHC for heavy stable charged particles produced in pp collisions at s√=7TeV is described. The data sample was collected with the CMS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb−1. Momentum and ionization-energy-loss measurements in the inner tracker detector are used to identify tracks compatible with heavy slow-moving particles. Additionally, tracks passing muon identification requirements ...Journal Article -
Measurement of the weak mixing angle with the Drell-Yan process in proton-proton collisions at the LHC
(2011)Physical Review DA multivariate likelihood method to measure electroweak couplings with the Drell–Yan process at the LHC is presented. The process is described by the dilepton rapidity, invariant mass, and decay angle distributions. The decay angle ambiguity due to the unknown assignment of the scattered constituent quark and antiquark to the two protons in a collision is resolved statistically using correlations between the observables. The method is ...Journal Article -
Observation and studies of jet quenching in PbPb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV
(2011)Physical Review CJet production in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV was studied with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7μb−1. Jets are reconstructed using the energy deposited in the CMS calorimeters and studied as a function of collision centrality. With increasing collision centrality, a striking imbalance in dijet transverse ...Journal Article -
Measurement of BB angular correlations based on secondary vertex reconstruction at √s=7 TeV
(2011)Journal of High Energy PhysicsA measurement of the angular correlations between beauty and anti-beauty hadrons (BB¯¯¯¯) produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the CERN LHC is presented, probing for the first time the region of small angular separation. The B hadrons are identified by the presence of displaced secondary vertices from their decays. The B hadron angular separation is reconstructed from the decay vertices and the primary-interaction ...Journal Article -
Measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV
(2011)Journal of High Energy PhysicsThe Drell-Yan differential cross section is measured in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV, from a data sample collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb−1. The cross section measurement, normalized to the measured cross section in the Z region, is reported for both the dimuon and dielectron channels in the dilepton invariant mass range 15–600 GeV. The normalized cross section values are quoted ...Journal Article -
Search for light resonances decaying into pairs of muons as a signal of new physics
(2011)Journal of High Energy PhysicsA search for groups of collimated muons is performed using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb−1. The analysis searches for production of new low-mass states decaying into pairs of muons and is designed to achieve high sensitivity to a broad range of models predicting leptonic jet signatures. With no excess observed over the ...Journal Article -
Measurement of the inclusive Z cross section via decays to tau pairs in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV
(2011)Journal of High Energy PhysicsThe first measurement of inclusive Z → τ + τ − production in pp collisions at the LHC is presented, in the final states μ + hadrons, e + hadrons, e + μ, and μ + μ. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb−1 collected with the CMS detector. The measured cross section is σ (pp → ZX) × B (Z → τ + τ −) = 1.00 ± 0.05(stat.) ± 0.08(syst.) ± 0.04(lumi.)nb, which is in good agreement with the next-to-next-to-leading order ...Journal Article -
Dependence on pseudorapidity and on centrality of charged hadron production in PbPb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV
(2011)Journal of High Energy PhysicsA measurement is presented of the charged hadron multiplicity in hadronic PbPb collisions, as a function of pseudorapidity and centrality, at a collision energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair. The data sample is collected using the CMS detector and a minimum-bias trigger, with the CMS solenoid off. The number of charged hadrons is measured both by counting the number of reconstructed particle hits and by forming hit doublets of pairs of ...Journal Article
