Abstract
In this paper, an iterative non-coherent post detection integration (PDI) scheme is analyzed for binary orthogonal signaling which is a suitable approach for simple detection in ultra-wideband systems with slowly fading channel characteristics. Unlike in the coherent case relying on first-order channel characteristics, the PDI operation depends exclusively on second-order moments such as the power-delay profile and the thermal noise power spectral density. We derive analytic and numeric expressions for the uncoded bit-error rate in Gaussian delay-dispersive fading channels and discuss the performance for different values of system parameters. It turns out that in a typical indoor environment, the PDI exhibits a 6 dB loss in signal-to-noise ratio as compared to the optimum coherent detection with perfect channel knowledge. Show more
