Abstract
The high spatial and temporal resolution offered by Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) enable unique insights into the effect of compression on the physical and chemical processes inside internal combustion engines (ICEs). Building upon previous work, this research aims to extend the application for DNS in real-size ICEs at previously inaccessible engine speeds. By taking advantage of GPU-based high performance computing systems, multiple compression-expansion cycles will be simulated under motored operation in the pent-roof engine experimentally studied at TU Darmstadt at 1500 and 2500 RPM, to investigate the large-scale flow motion and the evolution of the momentum and thermal boundary layers. Eventually, the fired operation will also be simulated to study flame propagation and flame-wall interactions. Mehr anzeigen
