Abstract
Wetzikon for Wetzikon is the core of our vision for a sustainable, balanced and attractive future for this now 26‘000 inhabitants city in the Zürcher Oberland. This report proposes a possible future for the Wetzikon of 2060 with 40‘000 residents, a Wetzikon for the people living in Wetzikon. Population growth and the growing economic strength of the greater Zurich area will put pressure on the municipality, challenging it to keep up with the times.
Some infrastructural measures are already planned, such as the double track expansion between Uster and Wetzikon and the closing of the gap on the Oberland highway. But various changes are also necessary at the local level and, above all, interventions must be planned now, with a critical sensitivity to present and future problems and an eye for environmental, economic and social sustainability.
The method used to develop this proposal is robust and reproducible. Starting from the analysis of the current situation, strengths, and weaknesses of the city are identified. Focusing on five pillars, a catalogue of interventions is developed and then tested in a perimeter in the centre of Oberwetzikon. Two different variants have been developed, differing in the presence or absence of a train station, resulting in different densification strategies and placement of public spaces. After an evaluation with multi-criteria decision analysis, a single variant is developed in further detail. The process concludes with the elaboration of a masterplan and the quantification and phasing of all expenses, recommending the city to focus on developing a real center by Wetzikon for Wetzikon.
